In education, a summative assessment is one with the primary goal of:&lt;br /&gt;
*evaluating student learning at the end of an instructional unit&lt;br /&gt;
*by comparing it against an appropriate standard or benchmark.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Examples of summative assessments include:&lt;br /&gt;
*examinations&lt;br /&gt;
*written dissertations&lt;br /&gt;
*presentations&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Information from summative assessments can also be used formatively when students or the faculty use it to guide their efforts and activities in subsequent courses.&lt;br /&gt;
