DFID is established to lead the UK’s work to end extreme poverty.
It aims to tackle global challenges including poverty and disease, mass migration, insecurity and conflict.
Its mission is to build a safer, healthier, more prosperous world for people in developing countries and in the UK.
DFID merged with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office ('the Foreign Office') in September 2020 to create the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
